Just One More Minute...

My painting, "Just One More Minute...", depicts the prevalence of screen addiction. I chose to create a painting about this because it is a problem I'm deeply familiar with, and I wanted to express that feeling to the world while also trying to change my bad habits.

My painting is my own take on a familiar sleepless nighttime scene. Several people are lying under their blankets, their eyes glued to the harsh light of their phones. Everyone lies on a massive multicolored spiderweb.

The spiderweb represents the World Wide Web and all the connections the Internet creates between people. However, it also represents how technology traps us in a screen addiction, just like a real spiderweb ensnares insects. Similarly, the white woolen cocoon around each person gives a feel of both comfort and danger. It brings up comforting memories of wrapping a warm blanket around yourself to relax at the end of a day. However, it's also reminiscent of a bundle of restrictive spiderwebs wrapped around a struggling insect, or a silkworm cocoon of a silkworm who has already been steamed to death. This illustrates how screens are so dangerously addictive because of the easy comfort they give us.

Screens can be highly addictive, and my painting also serves as a warning to not become too glued to your phone. I hope my work will inspire people to put down their phones and go outside, talk with other people, or something else.

I combined many different medias to make this painting. I painted the background with acrylic paint and stencils, but I chose to make the spiderwebs out of string to make them pop out of the canvas. I felted the cocoons out of wool, painted the people with acrylic paint, and attached them with glue.
